For an X1 study visa, you need the university's admission letter and the JW201 or JW202 form. The standard document list does not set a fixed amount of money, although an embassy can ask for extra documents in individual cases. Within 30 days of arriving, you must apply for a study residence permit.

Student Jobs

International students may not take regular jobs or run a business. They can do work-study arranged by their university, generally up to 8 hours a week and 40 hours a month in term, and 16 hours a week and 80 hours a month in winter and summer breaks. Off-campus work-study also needs your university's approval and a note on your residence permit. It is usually only for students who are 18 or older and have studied at the university for at least a year. China has no general job-search visa after graduation. Master's and higher graduates of Chinese universities with good grades can be hired within a year of graduating without prior work experience, subject to quotas.

Work-study during term: Generally up to 8 hours per week and 40 hours per month
Work-study in winter/summer breaks: Generally up to 16 hours per week and 80 hours per month
Post-study: No job-search visa; master's+ graduates can get a work permit within 1 year of graduating
