Tuition Fees

Each Italian public university sets its own fees, so there is no national tuition figure. Fees usually depend on family income (ISEE), and students whose income and assets are abroad can often use an equivalent ISEE or pay a flat rate set by the university. By law, state universities charge no fees for students with an ISEE under €13,000, and capped fees up to €30,000.

Tuition at public universities: Not centrally published – set by each university
No Tax Area (state universities): No tuition with an ISEE under €13,000; reduced fees up to €30,000

Living Costs

For a university study visa, you must show the Italian embassy or consulate that you have enough money for the year. The money must come from lawful, traceable sources. A confirmed scholarship can count, but a pending application does not. The amount is set each academic year in the Ministry of University and Research circular.

Visa proof of funds (2026-27): €10,179.85 per year (about €848 per month)

Student Jobs

A study residence permit lets you work as an employee up to 20 hours a week and 1,040 hours a year. If you work only during part of the year, such as the summer break, you can go above 20 hours a week as long as you stay within 1,040 hours a year. Self-employment is not hour-limited. After a degree in Italy, you can apply for a 9–12 month permit to look for work or start a business.

Employment during studies: Up to 20 hours per week and 1,040 hours per year
Post-study: job-search / business permit: 9 to 12 months
