Tuition Fees

National universities base their fees on a standard amount set by the Ministry of Education (MEXT). They may charge up to 120% of it, and since a rule change they may also set separate fees for international students. Local public and private universities are not covered by this standard and set their own fees.

National universities: standard annual tuition: ¥535,800 per year
National universities: standard admission fee (first year only): ¥282,000

Living Costs

For the Student status of residence, you must show how your studies and stay will be paid for, using a statement of financial support and evidence such as bank records or a scholarship. The Immigration Services Agency does not publish a fixed amount. As a guide, a JASSO survey of self-funded international students found average living costs of about ¥105,000 a month, not counting study costs. Housing averaged ¥41,000 nationally and ¥57,000 in Tokyo.

During your school's official long holidays, you can work up to 8 hours a day. Work in the adult entertainment industry is never allowed. After graduating, you can switch to a job-hunting status for 6 months and renew it once, so up to 1 year, if your school recommends you.
