Biotechnology
Biotechnology is a five-year Honours BSc offered jointly by UBC and the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), combining UBC teaching in microbiology, immunology, cell and plant biology, bioinformatics and chemistry with BCIT's hands-on lab training and courses in business communication, accounting and marketing. Students complete first year at UBC, spend the second and third years at BCIT, then return to UBC for the final two years; co-op work terms are mandatory, and the degree is awarded jointly by both institutions. This is not a direct-entry program: students are admitted to the Faculty of Science (BSc) and apply for the Biotechnology Honours specialization at the end of first year; enrolment is limited.

Tuition Information
2026/27 first-year tuition: CAD 53,082.00 per year for international students (Science rate, CAD 1,769.40 per credit x 30 credits) and CAD 6,200.70 for Canadian students (CAD 206.69 per credit x 30 credits). Years 2 and 3 are taken at BCIT, so check BCIT for the fees that apply to those years. Fees for students starting in 2027/28 have not yet been published. Tuition only; student fees, health insurance and housing are extra.
Admission Requirements
- Eligibility after first year: Faculty of Science honours requirements with a sessional average of at least 70%, plus first-year biology, chemistry, differential calculus and physics (or SCIE 001)
- SCIE 113 must be completed by the end of the summer before starting at BCIT
- BC high school: English Studies 12 (or English First Peoples 12), Pre-Calculus 12 and one of Anatomy & Physiology 12, Chemistry 12 or Physics 12, plus Chemistry 11 and Physics 11
- IB: Math AA (SL/HL) or Math AI HL, plus one of IB Biology, Chemistry or Physics
- English language proof, if required, is due February 15, 2027 (see English Language Requirements below)
