Bachelor Programme

Data Science

Data Science is the University of Manitoba's newest Faculty of Science degree. It combines mathematics, statistics and computer science to collect, analyse, visualise and interpret data, and it is designed to help local and global industries turn data into knowledge for decision-making. Courses include data structures and algorithms, linear algebra, statistics and computing, tools and techniques for data science, and a course built around real-world data sets.

Application Deadline

Fall 2027 (September) direct entry: apply by March 1, 2027. This is UM's annual direct-entry deadline for Fall, and applications open in early September. Direct-entry applicants who apply and pay the fee by December 1, 2026 are automatically entered in a draw for ten CAD 5,000 tuition prizes, five of them for international students

Tuition Information

International: CAD 804.00 per credit hour for Faculty of Science courses in 2026-27 (courses taught by other faculties are charged at that faculty's rate). UM's estimate for a full Fall-Winter course load is about CAD 28,000, including program and lab fees, the U-Pass, gym pass and UMSU health and dental plan, plus the mandatory Manitoba International Student Health Plan for international students. Canadian citizens and permanent residents: CAD 187.65 per credit hour; UM's estimate is about CAD 8,200. Books and supplies are extra, and 2027-28 rates are not yet published.

Admission Requirements

  • Apply online through UM's application portal. The application fee is CAD 130 for international applicants and CAD 100 for Canadian citizens and permanent residents. If a direct-entry application is unsuccessful, it is automatically considered for University 1 (UM's general first year) at no extra cost
  • Manitoba curriculum: a minimum 80% average over English 40S, Applied or Pre-Calculus Mathematics 40S, one of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science or Physics 40S, and one more academic 40S course, with at least 60% in each
  • International curricula: an equivalent 80% average over senior-level English, Mathematics (senior-level or Pre-Calculus), one of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science or Physics, and a fourth academic course, with at least 60% in each. UM's country pages list local equivalents
  • International Baccalaureate: an IB Diploma (24+ points, three HL and three SL, no grade below 3) with an average of 5 (80%) over English, Mathematics, one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Computer Science and a fourth academic course, at least two of them HL and none below 3
  • You apply to the Faculty of Science and declare this program later. Each Major or Honours program has its own course and grade requirements, and you can declare once you have completed at least 24 credit hours, usually at the end of first or second year
  • Science Co-op is optional. It is available in most Major and Honours programs and adds paid four-month work terms (three or four in total, starting in January, May or September), which usually stretches the degree to about five years. The 2026-27 work-term fee is CAD 710.80
  • These are minimums. When there are more eligible applicants than spaces, a higher average is needed, and UM notes that enrolment limits lead many faculties to restrict how many international students they admit
  • International students who need a study permit must accept the offer and pay a CAD 2,000 non-refundable tuition deposit before UM requests the Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL). The deposit is refunded only if IRCC refuses the study permit
  • English language proficiency is required unless you qualify for a waiver. Examples of waivers are study in an exempt country (such as the UK, US, Australia, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana or Singapore), a full IB Diploma with 24+ points taught in English, CBSE or CISCE senior English at 75%+, or GCE/IGCSE English (non-ESL) at grade B or higher. Test minimums: IELTS Academic 6.5 with 6.0 in each band; TOEFL iBT 86 with 20 in each section (tests before January 20, 2026) or 4.5 overall with 4.0 in each section (tests from January 21, 2026); Duolingo 120 with 105 in each subscore; PTE Academic 58; CAEL 60; Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency 180. Results expire two years after the test date and must be valid when classes start
