Bachelor Programme

Economics (BA)

Economics at UM looks at wages and employment, growth and productivity, wealth and poverty, taxation and government budgets, resource use, inflation and recession, and regional differences. It covers both the history and the current state of these issues while building reasoning and problem-solving skills. Students can choose several streams, take a field placement course for on-the-job experience, and do student research. The three-year General BA suits students heading to work or a professional program. The four-year Advanced and Honours degrees add specialisation, and Honours is the preferred route to graduate study.

Application Deadline

Fall 2027 (September) direct entry: apply by March 1, 2027. This is UM's annual direct-entry deadline for Fall, and applications open in early September. Direct-entry applicants who apply and pay the fee by December 1, 2026 are automatically entered in a draw for ten CAD 5,000 tuition prizes, five of them for international students

Tuition Information

International: CAD 689.23 per credit hour for Faculty of Arts courses in 2026-27 (courses taught by other faculties are charged at that faculty's rate). UM's estimate for a full Fall-Winter course load is about CAD 24,000, including program and lab fees, the U-Pass, gym pass and UMSU health and dental plan, plus the mandatory Manitoba International Student Health Plan for international students. Canadian citizens and permanent residents: CAD 163.97 per credit hour; UM's estimate is about CAD 6,900. Books and supplies are extra, and 2027-28 rates are not yet published.

Admission Requirements

  • Apply online through UM's application portal. The application fee is CAD 130 for international applicants and CAD 100 for Canadian citizens and permanent residents. If a direct-entry application is unsuccessful, it is automatically considered for University 1 (UM's general first year) at no extra cost
  • Manitoba curriculum: a minimum 70% average over English 40S, Mathematics 40S and two more academic 40S courses, with at least 60% in each
  • International curricula: an equivalent 70% average over senior-level English, Mathematics and two more academic courses, with at least 60% in each
  • International Baccalaureate: an IB Diploma with an average of 4 (70%) over English, Mathematics and two more academic courses, at least two of them HL and none below 3
  • You are admitted to the Faculty of Arts. The Advanced and Honours programs are entered after completing at least 24 credit hours
  • Arts Co-op is optional: students in economics and other Arts subjects can alternate academic terms with paid, full-time work terms (2026-27 fee: CAD 897.99 per work term)
  • These are minimums. When there are more eligible applicants than spaces, a higher average is needed, and UM notes that enrolment limits lead many faculties to restrict how many international students they admit
  • International students who need a study permit must accept the offer and pay a CAD 2,000 non-refundable tuition deposit before UM requests the Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL). The deposit is refunded only if IRCC refuses the study permit
  • English language proficiency is required unless you qualify for a waiver. Examples of waivers are study in an exempt country (such as the UK, US, Australia, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana or Singapore), a full IB Diploma with 24+ points taught in English, CBSE or CISCE senior English at 75%+, or GCE/IGCSE English (non-ESL) at grade B or higher. Test minimums: IELTS Academic 6.5 with 6.0 in each band; TOEFL iBT 86 with 20 in each section (tests before January 20, 2026) or 4.5 overall with 4.0 in each section (tests from January 21, 2026); Duolingo 120 with 105 in each subscore; PTE Academic 58; CAEL 60; Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency 180. Results expire two years after the test date and must be valid when classes start
