Bachelor Programme

Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering at UM is an accredited professional program that teaches students to design machines and processes using the principles of mechanics, materials and energy. After the common preliminary year, it covers mechanical design, manufacturing, computer-aided design and manufacturing, power generation, air conditioning, materials science and aeronautics. Students can follow an aerospace option or streams in aerospace, materials, solid mechanics or thermofluids. UM says its program was the first in Canada with a team-based capstone design course, and the department is known for its materials research labs.

Application Deadline

Fall 2027 (September) direct entry: apply by March 1, 2027. This is UM's annual direct-entry deadline for Fall, and applications open in early September. Direct-entry applicants who apply and pay the fee by December 1, 2026 are automatically entered in a draw for ten CAD 5,000 tuition prizes, five of them for international students

Tuition Information

International: CAD 683.43 per credit hour for Price Faculty of Engineering courses in 2026-27 (courses taught by other faculties are charged at that faculty's rate). UM's estimate for a full Fall-Winter course load is about CAD 31,400, including program and lab fees, the U-Pass, gym pass and UMSU health and dental plan, plus the mandatory Manitoba International Student Health Plan for international students. Canadian citizens and permanent residents: CAD 186.37 per credit hour; UM's estimate is about CAD 9,700. Books and supplies are extra, and 2027-28 rates are not yet published.

Admission Requirements

  • Apply online through UM's application portal. The application fee is CAD 130 for international applicants and CAD 100 for Canadian citizens and permanent residents. If a direct-entry application is unsuccessful, it is automatically considered for University 1 (UM's general first year) at no extra cost
  • Manitoba curriculum: a minimum 80% average over English 40S, Pre-Calculus Mathematics 40S, Chemistry 40S and Physics 40S, with at least 70% in each
  • International curricula: an equivalent 80% average over senior-level English, Pre-Calculus Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics, with at least 70% in each
  • International Baccalaureate: an IB Diploma with an average of 5 (80%) over English, Mathematics (Analysis and Approaches HL or SL, or Applications and Interpretation HL), Chemistry and Physics, at least two of them HL and none below 4
  • Direct-entry applicants are admitted to Engineering's common preliminary year. To move into this major, you must complete at least eight of the preliminary-year engineering courses and then compete for a place: applicants rank the five programs and are ranked by adjusted GPA, and meeting the minimum does not guarantee a place. Each program gives preference to Canadian citizens and permanent residents but aims to admit at least 10% international students
  • Students who accept an Engineering offer pay a CAD 250 non-refundable enrolment deposit, which is credited to tuition
  • The Co-operative Education and Industrial Internship Program (Co-op/IIP) is optional. It adds paid work experience that counts toward the professional engineering designation and appears on the degree parchment. The 2026-27 fee is CAD 462.85 per work term
  • These are minimums. When there are more eligible applicants than spaces, a higher average is needed, and UM notes that enrolment limits lead many faculties to restrict how many international students they admit
  • International students who need a study permit must accept the offer and pay a CAD 2,000 non-refundable tuition deposit before UM requests the Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL). The deposit is refunded only if IRCC refuses the study permit
  • English language proficiency is required unless you qualify for a waiver. Examples of waivers are study in an exempt country (such as the UK, US, Australia, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana or Singapore), a full IB Diploma with 24+ points taught in English, CBSE or CISCE senior English at 75%+, or GCE/IGCSE English (non-ESL) at grade B or higher. Test minimums: IELTS Academic 6.5 with 6.0 in each band; TOEFL iBT 86 with 20 in each section (tests before January 20, 2026) or 4.5 overall with 4.0 in each section (tests from January 21, 2026); Duolingo 120 with 105 in each subscore; PTE Academic 58; CAEL 60; Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency 180. Results expire two years after the test date and must be valid when classes start
